Population-level indicators associated with hormonal contraception use: a register-based matched case–control study

Abstract Background Monitoring factors related to hormonal contraception (HC) use is essential evaluating public health strategies and promoting access contraception. We aimed examine municipal social indicators of HC at the population level, identify patterns inequality across Finnish municipalities. Methods identified all women (15–49 years) with a redeemed prescription in Finland 2017 ( n = 294,445), control group non-users. Municipal level were retrieved from nationwide Statistics Indicator Bank. Differences between groups 309 municipalities calculated, associations municipal-specific proportions users studied using LASSO (Least Absolute Shrinkage Selection Operator) models. Results Sociodemographic differences non-users non-homogenous Indicators positively associated included: larger higher aged 16–24 years, household-dwelling units one person, persons education, divorces among those 25–64. Lower was Swedish-speaking population, 7–15 young people not education/training, overcrowded conditions. also outpatient inpatient healthcare, finances welfare healthcare. Conclusions relation exist structure, welfare, investment healthcare services are use.
